Movement Material: Camera/Dance Works by Jeremy Moss & Pamela Vail

The Nightingale welcomes Jeremy Moss and Pamela Vail to present a 60-minute program of video, 16mm projection, and live performance that highlights transfigurative gestures via the collision of camera and dance. This program explores the roles and functions of both the cinematographer (Jeremy Moss) and the dancer (Pamela Vail) while engaging questions of space, movement, and the ways in which the frame and the cut create alternate walls and rhythms.

Full of Fire: North American and Eastern European avant-garde films

The aim of the program is to create a bridge between the “Western” and the “Eastern” contemporary avant-garde film discourse. “We picked a few of the most memorable North American avant-garde films made in the last few years and looked for Eastern European ones which somehow refer or connect to them by following a similar trend or technique.”

As the overall picture of the contemporary avant-garde film scene is extremely complex, each selection is inevitably subjective and reflects the taste and preferences of the curators.

The Film Farm Lux 20th Show, curated and presented by Artistic Director and founder Philip Hoffman, includes early and recent films (16mm and digital) made at the Film Farm between 1994 and 2014.

Working in a number of intersecting and overlapping genres—including dance film, speculative essay and rich alchemical, film emulsion-based abstraction—the film/video work of Pennsylvania-based filmmaker Jeremy Moss explores and interrogates bodies, identities and places shaped by rigid boundaries and porous peripheries. His films incorporate intricate and direct camera work that often emulates (only to subvert and deconstruct) such strict structures. A featured artist in Cinematheque’s CROSSROADS festival in 2013 and ’14, Moss appears in person to present a complete program (including local premieres) of his innovative body of work.

Filmmaker Jeremy Moss, whose work has screened around the globe from the Crossroads Film Festival in San Francisco to the Arkipel International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival in Indonesia, brings a 60-minute program of recent moving image work. In the summer of 2011, Moss began expanding beyond his narrative training to fully explore lyrical and structural tendencies, creating the Super8 surrealist documentary Those Inescapable Slivers Of Celluloid, the abstract hand-made 16mm films produced at the Independent Imaging Retreat, The Sight and Cicatrix, the dance for camera pieces in collaboration with choreographer Pamela Vail, (Un)Tethered, Chroma, and That Dizzying Crest, and the essay film in collaboration with writer Erik Anderson, The Blue Record. As a program, these works cohesively embody an immersive optical and sonic experience revealing cinema’s capacity for both meditative expression and the rigors of collaboration.
