Atelier 105 - Light Cone Residencies

In October 2014, Light Cone initiated artist resideies dedicated to video-based post-production of films that fall within the realm of experimental cinema, with the objective of supporting approximately 10 projects per year. The residency is intended to suit the work-flow of experimental filmmakers, therefore eligibility criteria are deliberately kept open. Short, medium, as well as feature-length films are welcome, on the condition that their shooting is completed and their editing is already advanced, with or without the backing of an independent production company.

NOMADICA presents: WEEKEND WITH THE DEAD

A weekend-long, non-stop marathon on the occasion of the “Day of the Dead”; meetings and clashes, screenings and reactions, sounds and visions: dozens of international films’ and Italian premieres, a distillation of the most interesting contemporary experimentations.
Also: seminars, focuses, Space itineraries – in various shapes and formats, from night 'till day and from day 'till night. Spazio Menomale, dug towards the centre of the earth, turns into an art gallery and a perpetual theater where you can sink, a perception room in which there is no time to find, filled with routes and crossroads that become – as always in Nomadica’s experience – the artwork itself, unique, displaced and displacing, irregular and not (always) screened-off. Underground chaos where “the everlasting shape of life” resides.

Freedom Over Fear: Susan Stein’s Feminist Avant-Garde Cinema
    Curated by Mónica Savirón
Presented by the UC Center for Film and Media Studies

At age 17, artist Susan Stein was the workshop coordinator at the London Filmmakers’ Co-operative. In 1979, with Lis Rhodes, Felicity Sparrow, Annabel Nicolson, Tina Keane, Mary-Pat Leece, and Joana Davis, she cofounded Circles, the first feminist distribution network for film, video, and performance. Her 16mm films are driven by a female voice, her own, that speaks up against forced, abusive, fear-based structures. In her work, she examines language in the context of the femme-led writings and political movements of the time, and in contrast with the grainy imagery of her sensitive cinematography.

You, Me, Them presents ten films exploring disconnection and the limits of communication. Language and images can often be misleading and inadequate but when recontextualised, distorted or ruptured, we can sometimes glimpse what lurks behind the surface. Mixing rarely screened historical work with recent and brand new films, this diverse selection of experimental animation features a wide range of techniques including drawing, watercolour, CG and optical printing.

Microscope presents the first 2017-18 edition of our emerging artist series YES with a screening of film and video works by Alison Nguyen and Monica Savirón. Both Brooklyn-based artists’ bodies of works include 16mm films and videos that are situated within the tradition of “found footage” or “appropriation”, terms that fall short of conveying the painstaking processes of “seeking” each of them undertakes in selecting their imagery from sources including vast archives of daily newspapers, 16mm film vaults, and the web.

(S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico will return to A Coruña from May 31 to June 4 to celebrating a special anniversary- its 8th edition - with an ambitious program. The new edition, under the title of Objects and Apparitions, is inspired by found footage cinema under the figure of the seminal artist of this film process, Joseph Cornell. The legacy of the North American multidisciplinary and surrealist creator has guided the elaboration of the official poster, where, imitating a kind of Cornell box, the spirit of appropriation is used to reflect his whole philosophy. Together with Cornell, the (S8) will present the works of two of the most prominent representatives of found footage film now: Cécile Fontaine and Luther Price. In addition, the program Found Sounds, curated by Mónica Savirón, will revolve around the work of Dutch filmmaker Barbara Meter.

    Convalescing (Barbara Meter, 2000)

In the early 1970s, Dutch filmmaker Barbara Meter co-founded the Electric Cinema, to present and produce independent and avant-garde film. She made fiction films, political documentaries, and then moved to avant-garde film, pushing the medium forward with her unique way of repurposing documents and audio recordings, and with an innovative, masterful application of optical printing techniques. Meter manipulates the images and reworks found sounds to find and create a personal expressive mode. With film prints lovingly restored by the EYE Filmmuseum in Amsterdam, FOUND SOUNDS is the first comprehensive retrospective of Barbara Meter’s avant-garde films in the United States.
