Peter Gidal

Peter Gidal is an English film writer, theoretician, and filmmaker. Born in 1946. Gidal studied theatre, psychology and literature at Brandeis University, Massachussets, 1964-68, and the University of Munich from 1966-7. He studied at the Royal College of Art from 1968-71 where he went on to teach Advanced Film Studies until 1984. He was an active member of the since 1969, and Cinema Programmer there from 1971-4. Co-founder of the Independent Film-makers' Association, 1975, he served as a member of the British Film Institute Production Board, 1978-81.

    Artist and writer Simon Payne presents his new book in a special session that includes the screening of some of the films discussed, which explore structures, systems and strategies related to the interaction between light and darkness, musical composition, performance, abstraction, frame sequencing and animation. Like the book, the programme represents a dynamic, varied field that has defined some of the main concerns addressed by British artists' film and video from the late 1960s to the present.

  • The Author As Producer Of Nothing

    The book includes the first publication of Gidal's text from 1978, with a new introduction. Gidal in this dense theoretical essay deals with the limits of language and representation in the practice of experimental filmmaking and writing. Considered as one of the most influential experimental filmmakers, Gidal's lost text “The Author as Producer of Nothing”, will give a new insight into the theoretical and political context to the artistic film practices.

    Peter Gidal was born in 1946 and grew up in Switzerland. After studying psychology and German literature at Brandeis University and Munich University, he started at the Royal College of Art in London. It was also here that he seriously started his film career. In the 1960s his films appeared on the New Arts Lab in Drury Lane and the London Film Maker Co-op, which he also helped establish.

  • L'Âge d’Or 2016

    L'Âge d’Or Festival seeks to reconnect with the spirit of research, audacity and adventure of a mythical manifestation of the Royal Belgian Cinematheque, the EXPRMNTL festival (1949-1975), in which the first three L'Âge d’Or prizes were awarded. Designed by Jacques Ledoux, the festival was created to support the poetic and subversive films which, echoing L'Âge d’Or, Buñuel's 1930 film that broke with both cinematic and societal conformism.

    From 6 to 11 October 2016, the third edition of L'Age d'Or Festival will be held in the CINEMATEK with Joana Hadjithomas, Peter Gidal, Shai Heredia, Mark Toscano and numerous guests. This year's programme includes retrospectives of Bruce Baillie, Chick Strand and other filmmakers from the West Coast, a selecion of Asian experimental cinema and the premiere of Brecht Debackere's documentry film EXPRMNTL.

  • Peter Gidal - Condition of Illusion

    The DVD brings together 11 films by Peter Gidal made between 1967 to 2013. It is accompanied by a unique 40 page booklet of texts about the filmmaker’s work by Patricia L. Boyd, Stephen Heath and Chris Kennedy. The booklet is composed of transparent pages and was designed by Diana Vidrascu at RE:VOIR.

  • Peter Gidal: Flare Out

    A screening of four films by Peter Gidal to celebrate the publication of “Flare Out: Aesthetics 1966–2016”, a collection of his essays on film, art and aesthetics. Gidal was a central figure during the formative years of the London Film-Makers’ Co-op and made some its most radical works. His cinema is anti-narrative, against representation and fiercely materialist, and his writings are similarly polemical and unique. This programme of films from the 1960s to the present includes his most recent work, and will be introduced by Mark Webber and Peter Gidal.
