SCREENING LAV #033: Firefly-Films

By Marcos Ortega on Tue, 14/04/2026 - 03:16

“The room is darkened so that a ray of light can pierce it, enchant it, and unfold an entire world onto a two-dimensional white screen. That’s why, for me, darkness is neither unpleasant nor gloomy. On the contrary, I associate it with a condensed form of life. Immense, like the night. Intimate, like the pupil of an eye.”
(Anouk de Clercq quoted in Vicente Monroy’s A Brief History of Darkness)

Screening LAV #025: Film Bricolage

By Marcos Ortega on Mon, 27/01/2025 - 04:27

"For the DIY filmmaker, the means are often also the ends. Canadian film scholar Éric Thouvenel argues that the history and practices of experimental film embrace a “DIY mode of thinking” that “runs counter to industrial practices, which more often than not employ machines whose functions have been standardized and whose uses have been highly prescribed.”

Rewriting Film History, Reinventing Film Apparatus

By Anonymous on Tue, 03/06/2014 - 15:37

Microscope is very pleased to present Rewriting Film History, Reinventing Film Apparatus a program of 16mm films curated by Enrico Camporesi. The evening includes historical and more recent works by Jean-Michel Bouhours, Werner Nekes, David Wharry, Mary Helena Clark, Ernst Schimdt Jr., and Peter Miller that have rarely, if ever, screened in the US, and coming from the Light Cone Collection (Paris). Enrico Camporesi's description of the show follows: The notion of rewriting film history has constantly haunted moving image production. In the same way, challenging the basic cinematographic apparatus (the screen, the projection, etc.) has been a crucial issue in avant-garde filmmaking. The program seeks to explore the diverse strategies that have been adopted by experimental and avant-garde filmmakers in order to investigate such themes. The films are selected from the collection of Light Cone, the main European distributor for experimental and avant-garde films, and have been rarely (if ever) screened in the United States.

Dates:
Saturday, June 7, 2014 - 19:00 to Sunday, June 8, 2014 - 18:55
Venue:

Balagan presents... Mirror Stage

By Marcos Ortega on Fri, 10/05/2013 - 03:14
Balagan presents... Mirror Stage
Monday, May 13 2013, 19:30h
Brattle Theatre
40 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA 02138

Much has been said about what is regarded as the quintessential cinematic experience: the darkened, softened, uterine surroundings, the hypnotic flicker ahead, the lulling whirr from the projection booth. It is a comfortable hiding place from which to observe others\' nightmares and desires. As much as we at Balagan embrace this fancy, we like to break the spell on occasion by channeling an earlier form of cinema, when projected images elicited bewilderment instead of reverie.

This time, we aim to shatter cinematic illusions by shifting our attention 180° away from the spectacle. As we ponder the screen, the stage and the curtains; as we gaze into the spectators\' faces and observe their body language -- entranced or impatient -- we see a reflection of ourselves. So we enter Lacan's "mirror stage": the anxious moment of catching sight of oneself for the first time and beginning to grasp the reality of one\'s existence.
