Sink or Swim is a sophisticated poetic ode addressed by Su Friedrich to his father, a linguist who left his family when the filmmaker was a child. Raymonde Carasco formally revisits the myth of Gradiva, causing the pathological symptoms to migrate (in response to Freud's study of the text of the writer Jensen) towards plastic variations in which thought becomes form. Two dissymmetrical approaches of the "essayist cinema" under the sign of the questioning of the fathers (direct for Su Friedrich, linked to the archetypes in Raymonde Carasco).

Filmmakers Raymonde Carasco (France, 1933-2009), Elke Marhöfer (Cuba/Germany, 1967-), Chick Strand (USA, 1931-2009) and Mark LaPore (USA, 1952-2005) work primarily - from different practices - with ethnographic and anthropological studies, field and archival work. These four programmes with ethnographic films offer a discovery and unveiling of places, people and meetings with social, political and cross-cultural differences in focus.
Camera positioning, image room design, the thermal profile (all of which are produced for and recorded by the camera), things outside the picture, sound, and political and cultural discrepancies are crucial problematics of these filmmakers' positions in the choice of representation. They deal with history and try to release from the binary opposition, I and you and us and them as something alien, an attitude also vital in the production of films.
Belgian experimental film festival L’Âge d’or 'returns' to Brussels on October 8-14. 'Reviving the spirit' of the EXPRMNTL festival will present twenty-three films in competition as well as programmes dedicated to and with the presence of Birgit Hein (president of the jury), Gustav Deutsch (who will also deliver a masterclass), Friedl vom Gröller, Matthias Müller and Christoph Girardet, Robert Todd and John Smith. Mark Webber, editor of the recently published anthology of writings by Gregory Markopoulos will introduce two programmes of his works with new prints. The festival will also pay homage to Stephen Dwoskin and Adolfas Mekas and present curated programmes dedicated to the Italian avant-garde, and a double selection of “ethnographic poems”, with works by Raymonde Carasco and Robert Gardner.
