He occasionally presented an illustrated talk, “Cinema Before 1300,” exploring his fascination with medieval stained glass. After a presentation at the Harvard Film Archive in 2017, Haden Guest proposed creating a digital version of the slide lecture, which is screened here for the first time.

    Canyon Cinema travels to Berkeley this week for a special screening of pivotal works from its collection. As a part of Canyon Cinema 50, its celebration of half a century in continuous operation, and together with the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive’s ongoing series Hippie Modernism: Cinema and the Counterculture, 1964-1974, the distributor will co-present Elegy To Ecstasy, an evening of films made by some of the most influential figures in the history of avant-garde cinema.

    Legendary collage animator Lawrence Jordan presents his most recent film, a tribute to Max Ernst and Luis Buñuel, alongside a selection from his entire career, followed by a live film performance with John Davis.

  • Alternative Visions: Films of Jerome Hiler

    In the Stone House (Jerome Hiler, 1967-70/2012)

    Jerome Hiler's In the Stone House records and recollects a period of life of four years in rural New Jersey. In the latter 1960s, two young guys with monastic leanings leave the clatter of Manhattan’s art and film scene to catch the wave of higher consciousness that was about to change the world forever to find themselves washed ashore in a place only slightly updated from Way Down East. The monastic retreat quickly turned into the weekend getaway for a host of extravagant Manhattanites seeking films and fun. We learned from hitch-hiking guests that the police referred to our haven as “the stone house.” Although New Shores is a completely independent project, it could also be seen as a continuation of the world of In the Stone House. It affords glimpses of life led over three decades from the 1970s to the 1990s in San Francisco.
