Framework: The Journal of Cinema and Media vol.56 issue 1 is devoted entirely to the writings of avant-garde artist Warren Sonbert. The journal features reproductions of Sonbert's original typed, handwritten and published documents. The issue is guest edited by Jon Gartenberg and is organized into sections related to Sonbert's interests in art, music, poetry, travel and film.

Filmmaker, painter, anthropologist, musicologist and occultist--Harry Smith (1923-1991) was an incomparable polymath and seminal figure in the realms of beat culture and avant-garde art. Smith's kaleidoscopic experimental films have influenced generations of artists and cinephiles, while his landmark three-volume compilation, the Anthology of American Folk Music (1952), laid the foundation for the folk music revival of the 1950s and 1960s.

Brakhage's Childhood recounts the story of visionary American filmmaker Stan Brakhage's (1933-2003) life up to age 12. In 1983 Stan and Jane Brakhage began a series of interviews wherein Stan described his life and Jane took notes. Each session yielded a chapter and each chapter usually a place. After each interview Jane organized, wrote and edited the stories. After two years they had 23 chapters in 100,000 words.
Particularly in the ’70s and early ’80s, Ingo Petzke was a force to reckon with. This was mostly due to his effervescent, encompassing activities in the arena of experimental film: writing and teaching, starting art house cinemas and even festivals, sitting on juries and boards, running CINE PRO – Germany’s only distribution company specialised in experimental film – and even funding cash prices for budding film makers. Last but not least he was a filmmaker in his own right.

In Binghamton Babylon, Scott M. MacDonald documents one of the crucial moments in the history of cinema studies: the emergence of a cinema department at what was then the State University of New York at Binghamton (now Binghamton University) between 1967 and 1977. The department brought together a group of faculty and students who not only produced a remarkable body of films and videos but went on to invigorate the American media scene for the next half-century.
