This 16mm program features four films engaged variously with ideas of "text-as-image." Whereas Chaplin and Murnau once rejected silent era intertitling practices as "unfilmic," these filmmakers explore how text on screen could be just the opposite. Proposing self-consciously literal responses to longstanding scholarly questions about "film language," these conceptual works are as playful and comedic as they are formally rigorous.
DOBRA – International Festival of Experimental Cinema emerged ten years ago as a gathering of friends who shared their passion for experimental film. Throughout its trajectory, the festival has established itself as a vibrant space in Brazil, presenting screenings, performances, debates, workshops, and other initiatives that push the boundaries of cinema.

On Friday, December 5th, at 7pm, new digital restorations of Warren Sonbert's early films screen at The Film-Makers' Cooperative (475 Park Avenue South, 6th Floor), where they were originally distributed on 16mm beginning in the 1960s. These digitizations are now available to rent from the Coop, both individually and as a touring package.

The selected films all represent various imitations of life through limited animation, collage, and paintings. We are honored to return to FMC to curate another evening of exceptional experimental cinema.
