Nan Wang is a multi-disciplinary media artist and experimental filmmaker based in Rotterdam. She studied in the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and Willem de Kooning Academy. In her works, she employs a poetic, abstract visual language to construct immersive experiences, creating artworks that center around themes of identity, perceptions, technology, and social interactions. Utilizing both old and new technologies, some designed and built by herself, her portfolio encompasses interactive projection installations, optical devices, live audiovisual performances, and experimental films. In addition to her artistic work, Nan Wang is a core member of the artist-run film lab Filmwerkplaats in Rotterdam. Her artworks are currently distributed by Light Cone, LIMA and EYE Experimental.
We are pleased to welcome Nan Wang on Thursday 3rd of September to Kulturbunker Köln-Mülheim, where she will present “Hue Shift”, an immersive audio-visual performance that reveals the hidden beauty of light refraction of transparent materials by using DIY projectors and polariscopes. The composition of visuals and sound is based on the binary system from I Ching hexagrams, creating an ever-changing cycle of mesmerizing audio-visual experience. Accompanying the performance, the 16mm program “Machines for Seeing and Hearing” will be screened. The programme brings together a collection of 16mm films produced through material experimentation and the construction of handmade cinematic apparatuses, including a digital-to-analogue film printer, a handmade slit-scan camera, and experimental optical-sound devices. Across the programme, representation gradually gives way to oscillation, distortion, rhythm, texture, and noise. What appears on the screen emerges from an encounter among the filmmaker, the apparatus, and the material conditions of 16mm film. The evening will conclude with a conversation with the artist.
