The first overseas monographic retrospective dedicated to filmmaker Shin'ichi Miyakawa
On the occasion of this Personal Focus, we will have a special preview screening at Borgo Santa Brigida 5A of Miyakawa's latest work, "The Probability of Resonance".

The screening will be held in Parma at Borgo Santa Brigida 5/a theatre at 9:00 pm.

Shin'ichi Miyakawa, born in 1970, is a filmmaker who studied at the Image Forum Institute. During his high school years he aspired to become a professional wrestler, but around the same time that dream was replaced by a passion for 8mm filmmaking: so he decided to do 'wrestling on the small screen'. Since then he has set aside the dumbbells to take up his Fujica Single8 camera, continuing along this path up to the present day. Working exclusively on 8mm, he explores the resurfacing of primal impulses: something forgotten or buried returning to life through the sound of the shutter and the materiality of film itself. Among his major works are "Hodokeru", "Mizu umi wa hito o nomikomu" (Grand Prize at the Image Forum Festival 2013), and "Sayonara wa watashi ga nozoku" (Special Prize at the Place M Film Festival 2019).

In Italy, his films were first screened by us during UNDERGROUND FRIENDS, REUNITE! in 2024 and later at Circolo Ribalta for the screening MY VIEW last January. Miyakawa's work represents one of the finest examples of kojin eiga of the last thirty years. By shooting exclusively on 8mm, he keeps alive the spirit of personal cinema. The protagonists of his films are the faces of those around him, the camera, and Miyakawa himself. His work stands midway between the diary film. marked by the pervasive presence of the filmmaker's voice, and jikken eiga, i.e., experimental cinema. Many of his films have already been "dismantled"; we selected 5 titles to follow the evolution of Miyakawa's personal style, a gaze unfolding alongside the once imminent and now completed disappearance of a format: Single8.

What survives are revisited moments, fermented memories, recollections trapped on celluloid, private instants impressed onto expired film stock, and delirious recordings preserved on old sound cartridges, all accompanied by the constant resonance of the shutter. Miyakawa's filmography is inhabited by pulsating and overwhelming imagery that we are thrilled to present in a program never before shown overseas. So let us all dance together with ghost films!

All films are screened digitally with English subtitles.

The ticket price is €7.
