Cinema Konsonant and Kino Ponrepo present a two-evening program of the films of Jerome Hiler and Nathaniel Dorsky.
Nathaniel Dorsky's cinema centers on a poetic montage — relying not on a descriptive narrative but on an intuitive consonance between images. With this "polyvalent editing" technique Dorsky makes one image "resonate" with another several frames later. His films register objects of everyday life with great care and delicacy, making just a brief encounter in a poetic gap between too much meaning and no meaning at all.
Jerome Hiler also had a significant influence on the films of Nathaniel. Still, from the shared ground, they nevertheless arrived at distinct cinematic languages of their own. By exposing the same film multiple times and layering moving and still images, Jerome often embraces chance, allowing unforeseen images to emerge. For a long time Jerome showed his films to close friends only, and only recently they have become available for public screening.
A rare opportunity to encounter the films of both filmmakers, which exist only in 16mm format, and to experience both the deep commonality of their cinematic language and the subtle yet decisive uniqueness of their approaches.
