To mark the release of ‘Basin’ by Rocheman – a 21st century masterpiece of devotional art – The Hotel proudly presents a screening of Nathaniel Dorsky’s magnum opus ‘Hours for Jerome’.

Hours for Jerome is a cinematic lyric poem dedicated to Dorsky’s partner, artist Jerome Hiler, documenting aspects of their daily life in Manhattan and New Jersey. The film is entirely silent, and rooted in a centuries-old tradition of devotional art, from stained glass painting to medieval illuminated manuscripts and books of hours.

Cinema Konsonant and Kino Ponrepo present a two-evening program of the films of Jerome Hiler and Nathaniel Dorsky.

Nathaniel Dorsky's cinema centers on a poetic montage — relying not on a descriptive narrative but on an intuitive consonance between images. With this "polyvalent editing" technique Dorsky makes one image "resonate" with another several frames later. His films register objects of everyday life with great care and delicacy, making just a brief encounter in a poetic gap between too much meaning and no meaning at all.

We’re showing a split program dedicated to Dorsky and Hiler, two legends of avant-garde cinema known for their meticulously constructed works of abstract beauty. As partners for more than six decades, they have exerted a profound influence on one another, and so it’s no surprise that they share a number of artistic sensibilities (“polyvalent” theories of montage; sensitivity to the effects of changing seasons; a reverential approach wherein “film itself” might take on “the spirit or experience of religion”).

The Devotional Cinema of Nathaniel Dorsky and Jerome Hiler

"Intermittence penetrates to the very core of our being, and film vibrates in a way that is close to this core." In his book Devotional Cinema, filmmaker Nathaniel Dorsky identifies the feeling of illness or health that follows experiencing certain films, and locates as the cause a film's ability to "mirror and realign our metabolism." For example, the intermittent quality of light in film projection is not unlike our natural vision or the way we experience life (with gaps and moments of the unknown).
