  • Primary Stimulus: A Robert Russett Memorial Retrospective

    To celebrate the life and work of the singular artist and animation historian Robert Russett (1935-2015), guest curator Mark Toscano has assembled this nearly complete retrospective of Russett’s 16mm films.  This program will span his early, radical Pop hybrids of Sharits and Conner, through his fascinating and rigorous abstract perceptual explorations, to the haunting and ominous impressionistic rephotography works in which Russett explored his adopted homeland of Acadian Louisiana.

  • Not So Static - Films by Lorenzo Gattorna and Friends

    Echo Park Film Center is pleased to bring Baltimore-based filmmaker and programmer Lorenzo Gattorna to screen his films and those of subsequent influence. The selections sway between Gattorna’s speculative surveys and haunting hybrids by his contemporaries. Seeming counterparts coalesce in polyvalent montage, i.e. analog and digital technologies, intuitive responses versus structuralist tendencies, singular and superimposed selves, parallel yet particular places as well as the direction of camera movement or even stasis thereof. Sharing a devotion to both estrangement and cognition, these artists attempt to elucidate each other by examining some postulated approximations of reality. They introduce a given set of changes - imaginary or inventive - into the common background of known facts, therefore creating an environment wherein the impressions of the viewers will reveal something about the inventions, the characters or both. Seeing is a kind of knowing fraught with seductive half-truths, misdirected fantasies and the consciousness that often a closer look only reveals greater distance.

  • Film Farm 20th Anniversary Screening

    For 20 years The Independent Imaging Retreat or ‘Film Farm’ has been developing a hands-on, artisanal approach to filmmaking that is far removed from the costly, hierarchical and inaccessible industrial model.  Each summer it brings to Mount Forest Ontario a small group of interested filmmakers – some novices and some highly experienced – for an intensive week of shooting, hand-processing, tinting/toning, watching and editing film — most of the action taking place in and around an old barn on the Normanby Township property, in rural Ontario.

    The Film Farm L.A. 20th Anniversary Show includes early and recent films (16mm and digital), and concentrates its light on those `film farmers’ who have graced the west coast scene with their exquisite, playful and committed works on celluloid.
