The history of the cinema magazine Film Culture is unique. Founded in New York in 1955 by Jonas and Adolfas Mekas, the journal, first facing auteur cinema is needed quickly as the place of debate and analysis essential to almost everything that has important in American experimental cinema.
Born in Lithuania in 1922, Jonas Mekas has made over 80 films, videos and installations since his arrival in New York in 1949. Each piece is inventoried and accompanied by an image, a list of public collections and distributors, the technical data and one or several short texts summarizing the content of the work.

Four young people are trying to understand why their friend, a young woman, committed a suicide. A film made up of disconnected scenes weaving between past and present. The title of the film comes from a poem by Stuart Perkoff which tells that some young people felt (around 1960) that everything is against them, so much that even the trees in the parks and streets seemed to them like guns pointing at their very existence.
The 16mm films on this DVD reflect Hamlyn's early formation in painting and drawing, where intense observation was central to the effort to realise images of a visible world that is anything but straightforwardly apprehensible. All the work stems from the way the film medium lends itself to a particular way of structuring temporal images. In the case of film, as opposed to video, the characteristics and constraints of the technology push one towards a way of working with the frame as the basic spatio-temporal unit of construction.
The Centre Pompidou offers a unique and essential compilation of 8 short movies made by big names in the De Stijl movement.
This DVD was edited in conjunction with the exhibition "MONDRIAN / DE STIJL" presented at the Centre Pompidou, from 10 December 2009 to 19 March 2011.
