  • Bozar: Avant-Noir #1 & #2

    By on

In 2014 the program Avant-Noir was first organised on the occasion of the Artist’s Film Biennial at Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. It was conceived to celebrate the work of artists active in this new century who are struggling for a new value and a new perspective placed on the black image in film and video art. These essential films and videos and the artists who created them are in some cases woefully underseen, in other cases known but not celebrated nearly enough.

  • Xcèntric Cinema: Print Generation

    By on

Print Generation is one of the canonic titles of structural cinema. Its starting point is a repetitive montage of sixty shots lasting one second. It’s a filmic minute of autobiographical images then submitted to scrupulous copying per contact process. Conducted in close collaboration with a professional laboratory, the title reveals J. J. Murphy’s yearning to research the photochemical properties of the medium following a systematic generative methodology.

The videos in this program sample movies or use sci-fi tropes to present alternate histories that address issues around rights, identities, displacement, and conflict. In A Space Exodus, Larissa Sansour (Denmark’s representative at the next Venice Biennale) becomes the first Palestinian on the moon, trying from space to re-establish communication with Jerusalem. Nation Estate, her Swiftian response to Middle East deadlock, offers a vertical solution to Palestinian statehood.
