《심상心象: IMAGERY》
Contemporary Experimental & Documentary Screenings
"심상心象 (Shimsang: Imagery)" refers to an image that appears in the mind or a phenomenon acquired by the senses that is replayed within. Considering that "象" means "elephant" in Sino-Korean, it can also be read as "the mind imagining an unknown being such as an elephant." Another word that shares the same meaning with this concept, among other things, is image. When we say “image,” we usually focus on the way it is presented or its content, but the word "Shimsang(Imagery)" also encompasses the essential meaning of an image. According to this notion, an image is not just a matter of visualizing an object in front of you. It also refers to the way in which a shape or form exists between the visible and the imagined, the conceptual and the real. As such, "Shimsang" is a concept that captures the ontological meaning of images.
The contemporary experimental and documentary films presented in this series of screenings explore the fundamental properties of images as much as what they represent. They exploit the physicality of film to reveal the corrosive and evanescent nature of memory, create landscapes that are not real but could potentially be, and question the temporality and persistence of images. This may seem like simple nostalgia, but nostalgia is no longer a simple sensation. It's about imagining what an animal looks like that you've never seen, an exercise of the mind that hovers between form and formlessness. In conjunction with the screenings, Jihoon Kim, professor of Cinema and Media Studies at Chung-Ang University, will give a lecture outlining the aesthetic and epistemological features of ecocinema through 21st century experimental cinema and moving image art. In addition, there will be a post-screening talk with artist Junehyuck Jeon, EXiS programmer Inhan Cho, and film critic Park Dongsoo.
