An evening of hand-processed/intervened analogue short films.

To mark the opening of its new Community Darkroom, Barking Community Cinema presents an evening of hand-processed and artist intervened analogue short films. Featuring works which explore the materiality of celluloid film, this curated programme showcases many of the practices we hope to offer to new darkroom members. From historic alternative “eco” processes, to works which have been physically buried in the earth, these films challenge conventional cinematic practices, and can literally be said to be “handmade”.

Curated by Barking-based filmmaker, Will De Ritter. Will works with celluloid film and photochemicals to produce films which tread a fine line between experimental and genre movies. He is interested in working with obsolete photographic technology to produce effects which are digitally unachievable, and developing sustainable solutions to photographic practices.

Presented by Barking Community Cinema, which is co-programmed by Abel Holsborough and Maria Anastassiou and hosts free monthly screenings of independent, artist film and experimental work. They are launching a series of free filmmaking workshops and a network of Community Cinema Members in 2025, for people who live in or have a connection to Barking and Dagenham.
