In this session we are going to talk about an accident, a loss, and the accident of loss. A film will be developed in the room, and we do not know if it ever existed or if it was dematerialized before being. It may be that the celluloid takes over the room and expands beyond the projected image. Or, on the contrary, that all the ideas that come together in a room are condensed and visualized in the film of the film. Or, simply, that we do not see it but rather that it is told to us.

Esperanza Collado, a radical artist and filmmaker, builds her work around an understanding of cinema as an experience in its spatial, temporal, communal and social dimensions, seeking a film that dissociates itself from its technological base, that transforms the conditions of appearance and enunciation of the medium. Thus, he tells his story through cinema in a different way: absences and suspense lead people who watch his films or attend his performances to another dimension beyond the screen: to the place where one can delve deeper into the intro-projection capacity of cinema, into the mental exercise of a potential montage.

It is not possible to reveal more about what will happen in this room on this day.

After the presentation, the session will be opened to the public and to the artist to discuss her processes.

The interdisciplinary works of Esperanza Collado, artist-researcher, focus on the phenomenological and situational aspects of cinema and projection, to explore the dematerialization of cinema in artistic practices, the performativity of writing and the figure of the artist as metahistorian, through performances, site-specific installations and critical texts. Recently, she explores the spatial, sculptural, political, social and choreographic dimensions and potentialities of cinema by other means. Her book Paracinema: la desmaterialización del cine en las prácticas artísticas won the Prize for Spanish Writings on Art from the Arte y Derecho Foundation in 2011. In 2009-2010 she did a research grant on the body in film performances in New York. In 2020 she completed a research grant on expanded cinema in East Asia in Taiwan. She teaches at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cuenca (UCLM) and has directed the Master in Performing Arts Practice and Visual Culture (MNCARS). She has been a guest professor at Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola (San Sebastián) and MasterLAV (Madrid).

Collado’s work has been exhibited at the Museum of Moving Image (New York), Taipei Contemporary Art Center (Taiwan), Bristol Experimental and Expanded Cinema (UK), Irish Film Institute (Dublin), Close-Up Cinema (London), MNCARS (Madrid), Images Festival (Toronto), Palais des Beaux Arts (Brussels), MacVal (Paris), Tabakalera CICC (San Sebastián), Centro de Arte Digital (Mexico), Havana Biennial (Cuba), Image Forum (Tokyo), Anthology Film Archives (New York), Lajevardi Foundation (Tehran), etc.
