“Expanded cinema performance with two modified 16mm-projectors that reduce the essence of film and projection to the bare minimum: no image, sound or narrative. From frame to frame, the filmmaker balances on the edge in an improvisation comprised of light, dark and focus, with the film emulsion at a constant boiling point,” writes the International Film Festival Rotterdam about Luis Macías’ the eyes empty and the pupils burning with rage and desire. He describes his work with the term Spectral Cinema: an approach to the formal properties of the moving image through the exploration of the cinematographic device itself and the photochemical nature of the medium. The films, installations and performances extend cinema into its interspaces of photography and performance.

Luis Macías was born in 1962 and lives and works in Barcelona. He is one of the best-known Spanish filmmakers on the contemporary experimental scene. His films and Expanded Cinema works have been shown at renowned film, art and music festivals as well as in art centers, museums and alternative spaces around the world. Macías has participated in both group and solo exhibitions. He has also collaborated with various artists, musicians and filmmakers to create collaborative works. He is a co-founder and active member of Crater-Lab, an independent laboratory for analog cinema in Barcelona, and teaches alongside his artistic work in the field of experimental cinema and the exploration of analog formats. The feature-length program uses slide projectors and 16mm projectors.

The event series Film auf Film offers filmmakers working with analog material the opportunity to project their works in analog form and to exchange ideas about their working methods. The screening and accompanying workshop program with Luis Macías takes place in cooperation with the Filmhaus Köln, SK Stiftung Kultur and Instituto Ramon Llull.
