Ute Aurand is a Berlin-based experimental filmmaker, curator, and film educator. She studied at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (dffb) and emerged as part of a new generation of women shaping experimental cinema in 1980’s Berlin and West Germany. Working primarily with 16mm film, Aurand has developed a distinctive cinematic language grounded in rhythm, kaleidoscopic cuts, and recurring motifs. Her films explore everyday moments with remarkable visual textures. Since the 1990s, diary filmmaking has been at the heart of Aurand’s practice. Her filmography encompasses more than forty works, spanning from the 1980s to the present day.

Alongside her filmmaking, Ute Aurand has been an active curator and advocate for women’s film history, initiating programs such as the “Filmarbeiterinnen-Abend” and co-editing the landmark publication Women Make History – 25 Years of Female Students at the dffb. She has also taught widely at film schools in Germany and Switzerland and initiated the Bolex-Werkstatt at dffb.

On May 17, we are pleased to welcome Ute Aurand to Cologne. In an atelier talk at Filmhaus (2:30–4:30 p.m.), she will offer insights into her film practice and her distinctive approach to working with the Bolex camera. In the evening (6 p.m.), Aurand will present her feature film Rasendes Grün mit Pferden (82 min., 2019) at Filmhaus cinema, followed by an artist talk.
