  • Jennifer Reeves's When It Was Blue

    By on

An expanded cinema epic, Jennifer Reeves’s When It Was Blue consists of two 16mm reels projected by the artist atop one another on a single screen, each unfurling a contrapuntal stream of images captured from the landscapes of the Americas, Iceland, and New Zealand. Always on the move, Reeves’s film flits through an ever-changing world of sun-struck treetops, billowing hills, collapsing glaciers, and efflorescent lava, with fleeting portraits of owls, seafowl, snakes, and the occasional human.

“The room is darkened so that a ray of light can pierce it, enchant it, and unfold an entire world onto a two-dimensional white screen. That’s why, for me, darkness is neither unpleasant nor gloomy. On the contrary, I associate it with a condensed form of life. Immense, like the night. Intimate, like the pupil of an eye.”

  • Mari Terashima: Exquisite Tastes

    By on

Violent tendencies and good table manners are never far apart in the films of Mari Terashima. Her work often plays on the double meaning of “taste”— both a marker of refinement and class, and a violent expression of the desire to consume. From a bloodthirsty toy dog with a penchant for fine dining, to a troupe of self-mutilating, tea party-hosting aristocrats, the three films in this collection, made between 1986 and 2009, combine eccentric characters with imagery at once abject and delicious.

  • The Erotics of Space: Hiroyuki Oki

    By on

When Hiroyuki Oki (1964-2025) passed away suddenly late last year, Japan lost one of its most singular and tireless artist-filmmakers. His amorphous work, traversing documentary and fiction, frequently harnessed smaller, more intimate forms of cinema (8mm, 16mm, video, the home movie) for their unique potential. This program brings together four such ‘small’ works—short films in which a direct mode of filmmaking comes to express a sense of erotic desire and longing.
