Angolo Cieco and Borgo Santa Brigida 5/a are pleased to invite you to the first foreign Personal Focus of Mikio Yamazaki, an evening appointment in Parma and Milan to discover two programs that cover almost fifty years of work.

The screenings will be held on June 13 in Parma in Borgo Santa Brigida 5/a theatre and on June 21 in Milan at Angolo Cieco.

  • A Little While Ago 140min MAKE / Pretend 140min

Born in Tachikawa City in 1959, Mikio Yamazaki approached 8mm already as a teenager, shooting with his high school classmates fictional films in which they passed themselves off and improvised as "professionals". During his university years he joined a literary club and, as soon as the other members learned about his "pretend movies", together they decided to make an 8mm film. This was Yamazaki's starting point to film and project endlessly, becoming very active and well-known in the underground scene of the 80s and 90s. In 1987 his film “Umibe no kioku” (1982) was screened at the Berlin Film Festival while “Pu”, his only commercial production, was completed in 1991.

In the early 1990s with Isao Yamada he began to curate and bring together the works of numerous Japanese filmmakers at the screenings at the La Camera gallery in Nogizaka.

The new century arrived and the fate of 8mm became more and more vague, nevertheless Yamazaki continued to shoot on film until 2007, the year in which his last short in this format, “Yoru no kokoro”, was made. From then on Yamazaki would shoot exclusively in digital. He is among the many who keep alive and promote the long tradition of kojin eiga, selecting, programming and rediscovering various titles on the occasion of past events such as the 8mm Film Festival at SPACE NEO or the hundreds of retrospectives at La Camera in Shimokitazawa.

To date, Yamazaki has made 101 films with the most disparate subjects and tones, establishing himself as one of the most prolific names in Japanese personal cinema.

We have selected some of his lesser-known works, focusing on a journey that starts from his most private beginnings until the twilight of 8mm filmmaking. Fragmentary scenes of a journey that has not yet ended between diary and fiction, moments from a far away place.

All films are screened digitally and subtitled in English.
