15th (S8) Mostra de Cinema Periférico

The 15th edition of the (S8) Mostra de Cinema Periférico (A Coruña, Spain) will start with an homage to the late American filmmaker Kenneth Anger, a renowned figure in occult and esoteric themes on film. The festival's image draws inspiration from Tarot cards like The Magician, Strength, and The Wheel of Fortune - symbols that connect to Anger's exploration of magic and mysticism.

PAF 2016: Film Labor

PAF - Festival of Film Animation's section Film Labor presents contemporary experimental productions and activities by filmmakers from so-called artist-run film labs (film laboratories run by the artists themselves). There are more than fifty such groups all over the world dealing with film, in the sense of working with film material. Thanks to the technological and institutional transformation of cinematographic infrastructure, independent artists may now use industrial equipment and instruments that were previously only available in institutions. The aim of the cycle is to reflect their activities, which significantly change the options for film production and are often referred to as “experimental film.” Film Labor will introduce artists from film labs in Grenoble, Barcelona and Berlin.

French filmmaker Gaëlle Rouard is an alchemist specialised in the film editing process: she develops different methods on how to chemically process film into a completely new artwork. At the same time she experiments with new possibilities in live multi-projection. Her films are barred from solid structures: they all have a dark and mysterious atmosphere. Visualisation of nature and human beings are reoccurring themes in her work.

Karel Doing & Gaëlle Rouard have both earned their stripes in experimental film and as advocates of this medium and shown their works at various locations in Europe. OFFoff brings them together now for a night that will show the experimental possibilities of the 'expanded' format that is not 'limited' to display a work on 16mm, but to actively engage in the projection, to question the film medium.

Studio één: Experimental Films from the Lowlands
In 1990, as a student, Karel Doing decided to create Studio één. Many artistic, avant-garde, underground movements and counterculture movements seemed to be over. The rise of video and its academic use began to compete with Super8. To work against the decline of the Super 8 format and techniques, Karel Doing and two of his friends (Saskia Fransen and Djana Mileta) from the art school in Arnham, started to think about creating a new space and promoting the invention of DIY techniques for filming and processing Super8 films.
