The 15th edition of the (S8) Mostra de Cinema Periférico (A Coruña, Spain) will start with an homage to the late American filmmaker Kenneth Anger, a renowned figure in occult and esoteric themes on film. The festival's image draws inspiration from Tarot cards like The Magician, Strength, and The Wheel of Fortune - symbols that connect to Anger's exploration of magic and mysticism. This edition of the festival will focus on the work of women artits, including a major retrospective on the pioneering Narcisa Hirsch, to whom the festival also pays tribute following her recent passing. Other spotlights include American artist Margaret Honda, the underground cinema of Annalisa D. Quagliata, and an examination of the diasporic oeuvre of Franci Durán.
The festival casts a light on the youngest avant-garde voices from Galicia in the "Sinais" section, presenting works by Iago Lourido, Yasmina Farhani Luaces and Pablo Agma. A new "Sinais Latin America" section will feature pieces by emerging Latin American filmmakers. A notable focus is on Canadian experimental film, honoring the 30th anniversary of the pioneering Film Farm project, led by Philip Hoffmann, that gathers artists annually to create and share works using analog techniques.
Other key Canadian artists are featured, such as the Métis filmmaker Rhayne Vermette, whose debut feature Ste. Anne earned international acclaim. The program also spotlights the Chilean-Canadian Franci Durán and her chemically-processed works connected to Film Farm. Adding to the dynamism is a selection from the Egyptian-Canadian Robin Riad's the8fest, exclusively dedicated to Super 8 films. For the "Overflows" expanded cinema section, the festival hosts multidisciplinary artists exploring the frontiers of projection and performance. This includes Gaëlle Rouard, a founder of the influential Atelier MTK studio, presenting her award-winning film "Darkness, Darkness, Burning Bright", and London-based Singaporean Lynn Loo with her immersive multi-projector film performances.
