Refle-x-périmental #16 : Focus on the Canyon Cinema Co-op

In 2025, Refle-x-périmental continues to pay tribute to the work of experimental film cooperatives that emerged from the 1960s onwards, embracing independence, rebellion, and the (re)invention of both avant-garde cinema and thought. After celebrating the co-ops founded in New York, Hamburg, and Amsterdam, as well as the 50th anniversary of the Paris Films Coop, the winter season will open with a focus on the West Coast of the United States.

1967 was the year that the Canyon Cinema Co-op was born in San Francisco. Formed as a distribution cooperative for films made by members, it grew out of the itinerant Canyon Cinema formed a few years earlier by a loose association of Bay Area artist-filmmakers. The Canyon Co-Op was the west coast’s contribution to a growing international network for showing and seeing films that fell outside the bounds of polite manners, censors’ approval, and art-world decorum.

Avant-Garde 2: Experimental Cinema from 1928-1954
In the latter half of the 20th Century, Raymond Rohauer was one of the nation's foremost proponents of experimental cinema. This two-disc collection continues Kino's tribute to the Rohauer Collection, including the early works of Stan Brakhage and influential films by Willard Maas, Gregory Markopoulos, Marie Menken, Dimitri Kirsanoff, Jean Mitry, Sidney Peterson and others. The pièce de résistance is Jean Isidore Isou's passionate manifesto of film aesthetics Traitéde Bave et D'eternité (Venom and Eternity), which sparked a riot when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 1951. This edition of Venom includes 34 minutes of footage never seen in the United States.

The San Francisco Art Institute is pleased to announce “In Bed With James Broughton,” an evening of poetry, films, and performance on March 5 benefitting the work-in-progress documentary Big Joy. Using the life and work of James Broughton—filmmaker, poet, teacher, wildman—as inspiration, Big Joy explores the power of art to change lives. “In Bed With James Broughton” will be a lively night featuring poetry readings and performances by Keith Hennessy, Kirk Read, Jack and Adelle Foley, Karl Cronin, William Stewart, and others; a screening of some of Broughton’s films; and a sneak-peek of excerpts from Big Joy.
