@nipponconnection is about to start next week in Frankfurt a.m. and we're excited to be part of the festival this year!
exf f. will present two programs next Wednesday June 3 at @pupillekino.

The first program focuses on the work of experimental film pioneer Takahiko Iimura. the second is a foreshadow for our festival focus on Utako Koguchi in September, screening works by fellow female filmmakers such as Yuko Asano, Mari Terashima, Hiromi Saiki & Junko Wada from that period.

Bringing back the underground spirit of our early days, this year's Asian American International Film Festival (AAIFF) includes a block of experimental shorts. The program, Celluloid Synergy, features work previously screened at AAIFF from the 1970-90s by seminal experimental filmmakers (Danny Yung, Takahiko Iimura, Al Wong, Sean O'Gara) alongside more recent films of the next generation (Erica Sheu, Tiffany Jiang). We are very excited to see many of these films again on the big screen after so many decades, please join us!

During the 1960s and 1970s, Japanese filmmakers and artists disrupted the status quo with happenings, performances, events and political protests. The boundaries of art film were also expanded considerably. Julian Ross, an expert on the Japanese avantgarde, will talk about this underexposed history.
