  • Canyon Cinema 50: Technical Sincerity with Gordon Ball

    In 1980, Gordon Ball adopted a phrase from the Irish poet William Butler Yeats, "technical sincerity," as a touchstone for his first-person filmmaking. In the next iteration of our regular Salon series, the filmmaker will arrive in San Francisco to show and discuss six films from his body of work that exemplify this mode. This event follows a reading Ball will be doing at the legendary City Lights bookstore from his collection On Tokyo's Edge on Wednesday, May 17 at 7:00 PM.

Toney’s selection of his personal films span from his time at the San Francisco Art Institute to an excerpt of a current film-in-progress. Toney and other local filmmakers were involved with the co-founding of No Nothing Cinema in 1982 at 30 Berry Street, San Francisco.

  • Peter Hutton Tribute – Canyon Cinema Salon, led by Steve Anker

    The loss of Peter Hutton in June robbed personal independent filmmaking of one of its great artists and teachers. Through nearly fifty years of 16mm filmmaking, Peter took one of the fundamental aspects of cinema, the fixed rectangular frame, and made it his primary artistic focus, a means of exploring vision and consciousness. Peter’s elegant compositions were silent windows that documented widely divergent locations as places of mysterious activity, filled with sensual forms and subtle rhythms. The 16mm camera was Peter’s sketchpad, and it accompanied him on his travels to many parts of the world. His sharp observational eye was critical and politically aware, and was always alert to marvels of the moment, visual details that the camera was able to record and that would normally be missed.

  • Canyon Cinema Salon: Sandra Davis

    Canyon Cinema Foundation is proud to announce its new public programming adventure – the Canyon Cinema Salon. An opportunity for dialogue and exploration, these monthly events are designed as a platform for the community to directly engage and learn from moving image artists in an intimate setting.  Artists will have an open forum to present work from their repertoire,  discuss creative process, and share their inspirations. Free, open to the public and volunteer run, the Salon series is hosted by New Nothing Cinema (16 Sherman Street, downtown San Francisco).

    Join us for the inaugural Canyon Cinema Salon on Monday, February 24th featuring San Francisco-based experimental filmmaker and curator Sandra Davis. She will present a contrasting duo that demonstrate differing avenues of motivation and inspiration in her practice – Ignorance Before Malice (2006, excerpt), a blistering essay film that sheds light on the struggle to heal within the American medical system and coming to terms with one’s own physical limitations and mortality; along with a very personal, short, ode-like work For A Young Cineaste / A Une Jeune Cineaste (2014) which blissfully travels into another, and  private, direction.
