Tone Glow is excited to announce “You Wouldn’t Steal a Movie,” a program featuring 10 found-footage experimental films. The event will be held at Sweet Void Cinema in Chicago on Saturday, September 14th at 7pm. Throughout history, avant-garde filmmakers have recycled, repurposed, and reimagined older images into their own liking. In culling from a diverse array of sources—advertisements and educational films, newsreels and major motion pictures—they’ve constructed novel works that prove spellbinding in their new contexts.

Internationally acclaimed American filmmaker Phil Solomon (1952-2019) created a body of cinematic virtuosity and poetic resonance that profoundly expanded the found footage genre, as he explored and exploited material idiosyncrasies of his sources – whether chemically altering the emulsion of Hollywood films and personal home movies or détourning the digital gaming universe of Grand Theft Auto.

Phil Solomon (1954-2019) was an immensely passionate, inspiring, and kind-hearted figure to so many who encountered him and his work.  He inhabited this world as a generous friend, dedicated teacher and mentor, and as an artist of profound talent and feeling, whose films have inspired countless over the decades.  Los Angeles Filmforum has hosted Phil Solomon on a few occasions over the years, and he was always one of our favorite guests, presenting programs of great personality and memorable, lingering emotionality.  So although it is with great sadness th
