On 2 October, we invite you to the opening of the Videostation “Analivia Cordeiro. Computer Dance”. Our new “Videostation” format makes video art and experimental films accessible for an extended period of time. This edition focuses on the work of Brazilian video dance artist Analivia Cordeiro.
“Can you imagine, we have thousands of years of human culture but there is no way of writing about movement?”1 asks Analivia Cordeiro, one of Latin America’s first video artists. In the 1970s, she attempted to capture movement and generate choreographies using a computer in her video dance works. The idea arose from Cordeiro’s dissatisfaction with her previous video dance recordings and the lack of synchronisation between the dancers and the video cameras.2 The computer programmed by Cordeiro devised choreographies intended for both the dancers and the TV video crew.
In her video dance works, Cordeiro was not concerned with documenting dance, but rather with the interplay between dance, the video camera and its possibilities. For example, the costumes and the stage were designed in such a way that the dancers’ bodies and the backgrounds merged into one another through the camera’s stark contrast. The Videostation is showing three of these early video dance works.
This is the artist’s first exhibition in Berlin.
Two performances inspired by Analivia Cordeiro’s choreography will accompany the exhibition, presented by Daniela Georgieva and Gissauro.

This exhibition is a collaboration between Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien and attaque[e]r le vsible, curated by Lawinia Rate. The exhibition design was created by Chace Wai Shan Ho.
Analívia Cordeiro (born 1954 in São Paulo, Brazil) is a dancer, choreographer and video artist. She studied dance and architecture. She learnt dance using the Laban method under Maria Duschenes in Brazil, and later studied with Merce Cunningham, Alvin Nikolais and others in New York. She is renowned for her pioneering work in video art and motion capture. Her work at the intersection of dance, video, and computer art is particularly significant. Her piece “M3X3” (1973) is regarded as one of the first video dance pieces in which the choreography was generated by a computer. Throughout her career, Cordeiro has devoted herself to exploring the body at the intersection of dance and technology. She is a member of UNESCO’s International Dance Council (CID). Her work has been exhibited worldwide.
