This retrospective traces the long-ranging career of the great William Greaves; filmmaker, producer and activist whose trailblazing work defied racial and artistic barriers across the 20th century.

Through his work in fiction, docs, and experimental films, Greaves educated the masses and challenged the status quo. Born in 1926 Harlem, a true renaissance man, he worked first as an actor and dancer before forming a long-lasting career as a producer, songwriter, and director.

He held a pivotal role on the long-running TV production Black Journal, providing support to many important Black directors in an era of few opportunities. His films challenge historical erasure and carve out a space for Black history within mainstream media.

‘I am Furious Black’ wrote Greaves in the New York Times in summer 1970. Greaves’ fury with systemic racism, the persistent neglect and distorted representations of the Black communities fuelled his mission.

This programme surveys his career across the 20th and 21st century, celebrating his lasting impact.
