《Films About Lynne Sachs Who》
Lynne Sachs, this year's recipient of The Film-Makers' Cooperative's Maya Deren Award, is a filmmaker and poet whose work has moved across the boundaries of experimental and documentary, poetry and letters, archives and performance since the 1980s. Her films begin with the memories held by individual bodies and voices, homes and streets, friends and families, strangers and communities. Through these intimate scenes, she looks toward the wider world surrounding individual lives: migration and labor, war and politics, gender and history.
Lynne Sachs's films were first introduced to Korean audiences through NeMAF in 2010. Since then, opportunities to encounter her work in Korea have remained rare. Films About Lynne Sachs Who offers an occasion to revisit a body of work that has long been underrepresented for Korean audiences. Taking place at Indiespace and Sorigrim from November 14 to 16, The series presents four decades of Sachs's work through five screening programs and a special event exploring the work of Theresa Hak Kyung Cha. From early short films that observe women's lives and spaces, to works that document communal memory and social realities, and poetic films that explore the rhythms between image and sound, silence and language, the program offers a broad view of her practice.
Visiting Seoul for this event, Lynne Sachs will give a lecture on her work at Indiespace and join an audience conversation moderated by independent curator Kim Eunhee. At Sorigrim, she will also present From Your Mouth to Our Ears, an event with artist Sujin Lee that explores the life and work of Theresa Hak Kyung Cha. In Program 6, Sachs will present a live performance in connection with Girl in a Daunting Now. The event will offer Korean audiences an opportunity to share in the questions and sensibilities that Sachs has long explored through film and writing, voice and body. (Kim Ji-hwan)
