Part 2. Marginalia
Cinema Konsonant and Kino Ponrepo present the second evening of a two-part program devoted to the films of Jerome Hiler and Nathaniel Dorsky.
The program continues with Jerome Hiler's films MARGINALIA and BAGATELLE I, where landscapes and filmed elements begin to dissolve into layered patterns and gestures, and the material activity of the film itself gently shifts perception toward a more illusionistic field. These films will be accompanied by EMANATIONS, which reflects a slight drift in the poetic style of Nathaniel Dorsky, as he moved closer to in-camera improvisations rather than relying on polyvalent editing, as well as PRELUDE, which initiates a focus on nature that continues in Intimations, presented in the first evening
The two-day program will conclude with the purely structural film PNEUMA, which Nathaniel himself has compared to Ernie Gehr's well-known single-frame emulsion-only film HISTORY. The images in this film come from an extensive collection of out-dated raw stock that has been processed without being exposed, and sometimes rephotographed in closer format.
A rare opportunity to encounter the films of both filmmakers from original 16 mm prints — the medium for which they were created — and to experience both the deep commonality of their cinematic language and the subtle yet decisive uniqueness of their approaches.
