This book is a document. It’s an account via images of the evening of June 20, 2016, spent in Vienna in the company of the artist, Peter Kubelka. With his wife Luise, Kubelka had invited some friends: the photographer Heinz Cibulka and the filmmaker Jonas Mekas who had come with his son, Sebastian, specifically to film the party.

It is an exploration of the many alternative film forms developed by innovative figures such as Jonas Mekas (USA), Peter Kubelka (Austria), Guy Sherwin (UK) among many others. These paths of discovery lead us to encounters with numerous production and distribution institutions created specifically for experimental films.

Since 1985, publisher Paris Expérimental has become a singular meeting point between experimental cinema and its history. With around fifty landmark publications and events, this publishing house has contributed in France to the knowledge and recognition of experimental film forms that have often been marginalised.

Binghamton Babylon: Voices from the Cinema Department, 1967-1977
In Binghamton Babylon, Scott M. MacDonald documents one of the crucial moments in the history of cinema studies: the emergence of a cinema department at what was then the State University of New York at Binghamton (now Binghamton University) between 1967 and 1977. The department brought together a group of faculty and students who not only produced a remarkable body of films and videos but went on to invigorate the American media scene for the next half-century.

Free Radicals: A history of experimental film

Martina Kudláček - Fragments of Kubelka
This epic documentary subtly introduces the complex world view of iconic filmmaker and theoretician Peter Kubelka (born 1934, Vienna). While Kubelka's radical and pioneering body of films is a highly condensed work of about an hour focussing on the essence of cinema, his legendary lectures often unfold over many hours. These lectures on "what is cinema" and "cooking as an art form" are frequently illuminated by the presentation of archaeological objects from Kubelka's eclectic collection. He considers his ongoing collecting to be an expanded film practice which explores the evolution of humanity. Martina Kudlácek has carefully woven an open-ended portrait which goes beyond the biographical to reveal fresh insights into the phenomenon of film.

Insomnia explores the complex relationships that have developed between art and cinema. The show brings together a number of international artists and includes works and installations by Peter Kubelka, Hollis Frampton, Lis Rhodes, Stan VanDerBeek, Ben Rivers, Dan Graham and Stan Douglas.

As part of the exhibition, on March 22 there will be held a symposium with the participation of David Campany, theorist and professor at the University of Westminster in London and author of one of the texts of the exhibition catalogue; Alex Garcia Düttman, theorist and Professor of Philosophy and Visual Culture at Goldsmiths, University of London; Antonio Alberto Weinrichter, theorist and associate professor at the University Carlos III of Madrid; Neus Miró, curator of the exhibition, and two of the artists participating in the exhibition, Lis Rhodes and Peter Kubelka, who will offer a presentation on their work and its relationship with cinema.

The Austrian filmmaker Peter Kubelka has been a vital and uncompromising force in cinema for more than half a century. In a body of work that lasts not much more than an hour in total, he condenses and articulates the essential qualities of analogue cinema, distinguishing film as an autonomous artform. His 1960 film Arnulf Rainer, composed only of the purest elements of light and darkness, sound and silence, remains one of the most radical achievements in film history. In response to that earlier work, his new film Antiphon was revealed in 2012 as part of Monument Film, a powerful testament to the entire medium. With two 35mm projectors situated in the auditorium, each film is screened individually, then combined as double projections, both side-by-side and superimposed upon each other. Throughout this extraordinary projection event, Peter Kubelka will discuss his theories, explaining the differences between film and digital media, and articulating his belief in the survival of cinema.
