Marcel Broodthaers, famous for his iconic art objects and décors, also made some fifty short films. In addition, many of his works contain references to the history, technology, and conventions of cinema. The symposium Marcel Broodthaers & Cinema: ‘Poèmes cinématographiques’, Moving Scripts, jointly organized by the University of Antwerp, CINEMATEK, WIELS, Cinea, and Maria Gilissen – Succession Marcel Broodthaers aims to highlight this aspect of his oeuvre. It welcomes both the general public and connoisseurs.

We travel back to the years 1968-1972 when Ledoux was a brilliant programmer and festival organiser in search for thoughtprovoking cinema... that is still relevant in 2022. These two rarely screened masterpieces circulated in the best festivals of the time, including Ledoux’s own Films Jeunes / Films Inédits.

The first weekend of June Cinematek celebrates the combat of women, female artists and filmmakers, feminists and their commitment. A weekend focus on female pioneers who have brought new representations of women to the screen, made the camera a weapon for emancipation and have innovated film language: From Les Insoumuses, Carole Roussopoulos & Delphine Seyrig, to Barbara Hammer, and Carolee Schneemann. Four screenings that are remarkably intertwined.

L'Âge d’Or Festival seeks to reconnect with the spirit of research, audacity and adventure of a mythical manifestation of the Royal Belgian Cinematheque, the EXPRMNTL festival (1949-1975), in which the first three L'Âge d’Or prizes were awarded. Designed by Jacques Ledoux, the festival was created to support the poetic and subversive films which, echoing L'Âge d’Or, Buñuel's 1930 film that broke with both cinematic and societal conformism.
From 6 to 11 October 2016, the third edition of L'Age d'Or Festival will be held in the CINEMATEK with Joana Hadjithomas, Peter Gidal, Shai Heredia, Mark Toscano and numerous guests. This year's programme includes retrospectives of Bruce Baillie, Chick Strand and other filmmakers from the West Coast, a selecion of Asian experimental cinema and the premiere of Brecht Debackere's documentry film EXPRMNTL.

Belgian experimental film festival L’Âge d’Or comes back next October 3-10 with the second edition of its new run. 2015 celebrates the 50th anniversary of Super 8 and so for its second edition, the Âge d’Or festival has chosen to pay homage to the work of the fiercest advocates of this format, too often denigrated and considered ‘amateur’. A format however that has been, and sometimes still is, the terrain of innovative cinematic experiments, full of the constraints that only it can create.

'Reviving the spirit' of the EXPRMNTL festival will present twenty-three films in competition as well as programmes dedicated to and with the presence of Birgit Hein (president of the jury), Gustav Deutsch (who will also deliver a masterclass), Friedl vom Gröller, Matthias Müller and Christoph Girardet, Robert Todd and John Smith. Mark Webber, editor of the recently published anthology of writings by Gregory Markopoulos will introduce two programmes of his works with new prints. The festival will also pay homage to Stephen Dwoskin and Adolfas Mekas and present curated programmes dedicated to the Italian avant-garde, and a double selection of “ethnographic poems”, with works by Raymonde Carasco and Robert Gardner.
