  • OffOff Cinema: Spaces of Cinema. Salon of the Ciné-Amateurs

    Curated by Petra Belç and Kaya Erdinç, the evening explores the works of Yugoslav (amateur) filmmakers who participated in the 1960s Genre Film Festival (GEFF), an experimental arts festival taking place in Zagreb. GEFF was initiated by a series of discussions under the aegis “Antifilm and Us” taking place in the Ciné-club Zagreb. With each new edition, the festival pushed the liberatory and the exploratory potential of cinema to the limit. Everything was allowed, and everything was questioned. The rules had to be broken as the organizers searched for a new vision of the world. Taking cues from the (un)realized performative ideas of the organizers and the structure of GEFF’s programme, Belç and Erdinç will revive its intentions and explore the existing possibilities of their deeply revolutionary and humanist vision.

    The cinema is a magical place. In 1975, Roland Barthes mused aboutce noir du cinémaas simultaneously hypnotic and fixative, fascinating and liberating. Sometimes, experimental films seek out the slumber that is distinctive of cinema, then again, they oppose it, celebrate alienation, break through the fourth wall and appeal to the awake spectator, leaving behind familiar film forms, good taste and cultural patterns.

    Initiated by members of Knowledge Is A Does (KIAD) and with special contributions by Rory Pilgrim, Brendan Curtis and Sarah Browne, we present a selection of videos, performance- and sound based works. Disassemblies 9, a reading group and evening programme, explores Vanessa Agard-Jones’ theory on bodies in systems, which she defines as a movement directing us from the innards of embodiment to the space of global capital.
