  • Slow Writing. Thom Andersen on Cinema

Slow Writing is a collection of articles by Thom Andersen that reflect on the avant-garde, Hollywood feature films, and contemporary cinema. His critiques of artists and filmmakers as diverse as Yasujirō Ozu, Nicholas Ray, Andy Warhol, and Christian Marclay locate their work within the broader spheres of popular culture, politics, history, architecture, and the urban landscape. The city of Los Angeles and its relationship to film is a recurrent theme.

  • Codes for North: Foundations of the Canadian Avant-Garde Film

Codes for North is a study of the early evolution of the Canadian avant-garde film and its roots in an aesthetic of difficulty. Stephen Broomer traces the evolution of this cinema through the work of three artists—Jack Chambers, Michael Snow and Joyce Wieland—from their early development as painters in the 1950s to the creation of their epic films: Reason Over Passion (1969), The Hart of London (1970), and La Region Centrale (1971). Their work formed in response to a strain of Neo-Dada that took root in southern Ontario in the late 1950s.

  • Friedl Kubelka Vom Gröller - One Is Not Enough. Photography & Film

    Book + DVD + Magazine

The heart of Friedl Kubelka’s photographic work (who as a filmmaker goes by the name of Friedl vom Gröller) is constituted by portraiture – whether she captures friends, acquaintances, family members, filmmakers, artists or simply clients, each for the most part gazing directly into the camera. Since 1972 to the present, Kubelka has also placed herself in front of the camera for her project Jahresportraits (Year’s Portraits) in which she mercilessly documents the process of aging. It has become the structural credo of Kubelka’s artistic practice to juxtapose the individual photograph with many other photographs.
