Tone Glow Presents "Little Histories: The Films of Greta Snider"

Tone Glow is excited to announce “Little Histories: The Films of Greta Snider,” a career-spanning retrospective of the Bay Area filmmaker. Since the 1990s, Snider has weaved found footage and documentary into stirring montages rife with hand-processed footage, optical printing, and diaristic narration. Inspired by the modest portraiture of Curt McDowell’s Ronnie (1972), she felt empowered to make works that could transform small, personal stories into history.

Cinema Project is excited to host guest curator David Dinnell, who has crafted two unique evenings of experimental film and video for us. Over the course of two evenings, we will see 19 contemporary works of animation, fiction, abstraction, observation, and motion studies, including three rarely presented works for multiple 16mm projection.

Join Brand New Blinkers for an evening of short films loosely based around the theme of HISTORY. Films detailing a record of past events, past objects, past lives.

Including (amongst other things): A personal history flashing before our eyes, a group of friends recounting the history of a disastrous trip to Portland, 3000 old photographs showing us life in Beijing, a children’s “take-over” of a geothermal area known as The Devil’s Valley.

Including films by Joseph Bernard, Mikhail Karikis, Lei Lei and Thomas Sauvin, Chris Milk, Greta Snider and many more….

Much critical attention to women’s avant-garde filmmaking of the 1970s and 1980s focused on East coast and European feminist filmmakers, the critique of visual pleasure and the notion of the male gaze in cinema. In San Francisco, a new generation of feminist avant-garde filmmakers were emerging with a very different approach to questions of gender and pleasure in cinema.

Eye on a Director: Canyon Cinema

For the second installment of Eye on a Director, MAD highlights the collection of the legendary film distributor and archive Canyon Cinema. In the late 1950s, Canyon Cinema brought together independent film artists whose work reflected a remarkable diversity in style and content. Variously called avant-garde, underground and experimental, these artists shared a vision of filmmaking as a form of personal expression, free from the demands and constraints of commercial conventions.

presents a show with guest curator Sasha Waters Freyer

Try a Little Tenderness is a selection of old and new works in 16mm film and video about being vulnerable – exposed and unsafe. Susceptible, yet ready. The program is a personal and collective response to the ontology of artistic canons in and of themselves. It presents a selection of works that cross and expose the boundaries by including Net Art, music video, performance-documentation and video art alongside more traditional approaches to experimental cinema. These nine works address, in very different ways and formats, acts of being naked to the world – the human body in search of love, food, adventure or acceptance; the human challenge to “acceptable” conduct based on race and gender stereotypes. Try It – Try a Little Tenderness. With works by Greta Snider, Kelly Gallagher, Tova Mozard, Ira Eduardovna, Jennifer Chan, Alma Alloro, Laurel Nakadate, Leslie Hall, Roger Beebe and Sasha Waters Freyer.
