When attempting to remap some early milieus of experimental film culture in Sweden, one cannot help but notice their scattered nature. The 1950s saw the beginning of co-op initiatives with the establishment of Svensk Experiment Film Studio in 1950 (today, Filmform); artists and painters, transfixed by its polysemic kinetic and temporal nature, turned to filmmaking; and a steady group of cinephiles was incipient in the burgeoning film clubs.

¿Lo olvidamos ¿O huimos de él?
Nos vamos encarcelando, poniéndonos barreras, alejándonos de la curiosidad. Miramos el juego como símbolo infantil, pero es un acto que abre un espacio. Un espacio donde se genera la curiosidad, y donde el saber poco nos permitirá todo. Aquí nace el ritual del juego.
¿Qué es estar en el mundo, si no simplemente conocer nuestro alrededor, mirar, existir, convivir?
Olvidamos que el juego es lo que nos acerca a lo que conocemos.

After celebrating the co-ops founded in New York, Hamburg, and Amsterdam, as well as the 50th anniversary of the Paris Films Coop, the winter season will open with a focus on the West Coast of the United States.

Tone Glow is excited to announce “On the Move,” two programs of avant-garde dance films and road movies that will take place on Sunday, October 13th at 2PM and Monday, October 14th at 7PM. Screenings will be held at Sweet Void Cinema in Chicago. These films showcase a wide range of styles and ideas regarding the notion of a “dance film” and “road movie,” finding ways to complicate and expand their meaning. The intent is to further encourage contemplation of these works through their juxtapositions.

Technology and the Making of Experimental Film Culture
The Bolex camera, 16mm reversal film stocks, commercial film laboratories, and low-budget optical printers were the small-gauge media technologies that provided the infrastructure for experimental filmmaking at the height of its cultural impact. Technology and the Making of Experimental Film Culture examines how the avant-garde embraced these material resources and invested them with meanings and values adjacent to those of semiprofessional film culture.

Cinema Parenthèse and iMAL present the program Gunvor Nelson - Collage Films. Nelson was born in 1931 in Stockholm, but grew up in the small town of Kristinehamn, Sweden. After studying art in Stockholm, she moved to San Francisco in 1953 where she studied and later taught art and film at San Francisco State University (1969–70) and the San Francisco Art Institute (1970–1992).
