Retracted Cinema (Redux)

This one-hour program presents fifteen experimental shorts that focus on recontextualizing found or archival footage via algorithmic intervention. The work presented in the Retracted Cinema program use the appropriated film material itself as the site and means of auto-recontextualisation. Inspired by tendencies within conceptual art and Oulipo, the results are achieved by applying a set of rules or constraints (an algorithm) that governs a repeatable (iterative) array of transformations.

At a time when images are increasingly subject to digital processing through a multiplicity of technologies and formats, artists are confronted by a plethora of visual and expressive possibilities. The 16mm films and videos by New York artists assembled for this programme present personal ways of chemically or digitally manipulating moving images.

The diversity of thought with cinema. Thus the text as an image, the relations between image and sound, are part of personal films with an autobiographical dimension. Themes such as the contemporary consumer society, advertising, representation of women and neocolonialism are the focus of several sessions. While others show the film in a situation where celluloid and video speak their differences through the film as sculpture. The issue of the media, placing film and video in different sites, ranging from theater to the gallery, will also be addressed in the sessions. The films will be screened with subtitles in Portuguese and those will be available for filmmakers, and / or distributors.

New York based media artist and theorist Keith Sanborn joins us at MICROSCOPE Gallery on October 9th 7PM for a rich program of his radical video works. Keith Sanborn’s work has been included in major survey exhibitions such as the Whitney Biennial, the American Century, and Monter/Sampler and festivals such as OVNI (Barcelona), The Rotterdam International Film Festival, Hong Kong Videotage, and Ostranenie (Dessau). His theoretical work has appeared in a range of publications from journals such as Artforum and books, such as Kunst nach Ground Zero to exhibition catalogues published by MOMA (New York), Exit Art, and the San Francisco Cinematheque. He has translated into English the work of Guy Debord, René Viénet, Gil Wolman, Georges Bataille, Napoleon, Paolo Gioli, Berthold Brecht, Lev Kuleshov and Esther Shub among others. He has also acted as an independent curator, working with such institutions as the Oberhausen Short Film Festival, Exit Art, Artists Space, the Pacific Film Archive.
