    While structural film was the dominant form within the avant-garde tradition at the dawn of the 1970s, animators used shape and structure in a variety of ways that differentiated their works. Robert Russett composed geometric patterns and colour sequences in complex rhythms to create his pulsing, abstract films. Paul Glabicki created incisive, analytical works that explored objects through image, language, form and movement, drafting stunningly complicated sequences by hand.

    Since the 1960s, acclaimed experimental filmmaker Pat O’Neill has explored the visual complexities of moving images on screen, first through his mastery of the optical printer and more recently through digital tools. This program presents exemplary works of each. One of O’Neill’s final works on celluloid, the 35mm Trouble in the Image (1996) is a moving image artist’s book that hints and nudges towards rich connections and associations.

    From the City of Angels to the City of Light, the filmmaker/programmer/film restorer Mark Toscano offers us in this program recently restored copies of Los Angeles artists' films.

    The avant-garde cinematographic movement of Los Angeles has been for decades little studied and shown in comparison to the other two major US avant-garde centers New York and San Francisco. The city of Los Angeles has howver witnessed an extremely varied production and that has been the origin of a particularly influential culture of experimental film.

    American filmmaker Kate McCabe will come to Spektrum to present some films that have been highly influental for her own work.

    Originally from Philadelphia Kate McCabe studied Experimental Animation at CalArts, where she now is assistant of legendary US-american filmmaker Pat O'Neill. Since 1995 McCabe's films have travelled the globe and she finally managed to find some time to come to Berlin. When not making books or chasing lightning storms with her camera, Kate works on her sketch comic 'Mojave Weather Diaries'. She says "When I work with film, I play with light and time, rhythm and shadow."

  • DIM Cinema: Almanac (Circa 1970)

    In 1970, a unique project was commissioned by the Stills Division of the National Film Board of Canada: fifteen West Coast artists -- many of them using a camera for the first time -- were invited to create a series of photographic booklets that were later compiled into an anthology. The B.C. Almanac(h) C-B artists conceived the book as an exhibition, and designed the accompanying exhibition as a 3-D version of the book’s production. To bring to light this forgotten event in the history of West Coast media art, Presentation House Gallery has reprinted the anthology and remounted the exhibition, along with works from the period by artists featured in the book.
