    Found Footage Magazine issue #7: Special on Christoph Girardet & Matthias Müller

    Their approaches to found footage, at once likeminded and singular, have served Christoph Girardet and Matthias Müller well since 1999, during which time the two of them have collaborated on nearly thirty films and photographic works. Varied metaphors and modes of inquiry have been used to analyze their oeuvre: to some, Girardet and Müller provide a “suggestive continuum,” exposing the patterns of light and darkness, absence and presence, by which cinema operates; to others, the filmmakers dissect the body of film history and of the cinematic apparatus, suggesting the moving image as a corporeal grouping of skin, guts, brains, and bones to pick apart.

    We're thrilled to present a rare screening of the visual diaries of the renowned American independent filmmaker George Kuchar, bringing together his series of films known as the Weather Diaries for the first time in the UK. Greetings from Boulder, an earlier tape from one of Kuchar’s reflective vacations in Colorado, will also be screened alongside the Diaries. The programme will be introduced via Skype by Professor Scott MacDonald, one of the leading academics in the field of experimental film.

  • Gustav Deutsch: Not Home. Picturing the Foreign Films 1990-2015

    Over the past half-century, two tendencies have dominated independent, artisanal filmmaking. One of these is the fascination with the material artifacts of cinema´s history: it is often called »found-footage filmmaking« and sometimes »recycled cinema«.     In Binghamton Babylon, Scott M. MacDonald documents one of the crucial moments in the history of cinema studies: the emergence of a cinema department at what was then the State University of New York at Binghamton (now Binghamton University) between 1967 and 1977.
