Edge of Frame: The Films of Jodie Mack

Edge of Frame and Close-Up are proud to present a two-part programme of films by highly acclaimed experimental animator Jodie Mack. Part one gathers a selection of shorts, illuminating formal and cursory elements shared between fine-art abstraction and mass-produced graphic design; whilst part two presents the UK premiere of her highly anticipated debut feature The Grand Bizarre. We’re thrilled that Jodie will be present throughout and will be in conversation following both screenings.

Edge of Frame: After Nature (Parts One and Two)

After Nature is a two-part programme of experimental animation focusing on work engaged with ideas of technology and the environment. Part One a selection of films respond to man-made waste, disasters and ecological catastrophe. Part Two explores ideas of landscape and technology, and the merging of the real and the virtual, with works combining CG animation, live action and found footage.

Edge of Frame: You, Me, Them

You, Me, Them presents ten films exploring disconnection and the limits of communication. Language and images can often be misleading and inadequate but when recontextualised, distorted or ruptured, we can sometimes glimpse what lurks behind the surface. Mixing rarely screened historical work with recent and brand new films, this diverse selection of experimental animation features a wide range of techniques including drawing, watercolour, CG and optical printing.

Edge of Frame: Signal to Noise

Edge of Frame started life as a blog on experimental animation written by artist and curator Edwin Rostron, and last year grew into a boundary-hopping weekender at the Whitechapel Gallery and Close-Up Cinema. We asked Rostron to put together a special Optical Sound-inspired programme of shorts, and he’s delivered the goods with a selection of extraordinary experiments exploring sound and music in various interesting ways.

Edges: an Animation Seminar

This seminar – part of the Edge of Frame Weekend – will address the questions of where experimental animation practice sits – at the ‘edges’ – in relation to independent animation, visual arts, histories, institutions. The seminar will do this not through the usual presentation of papers, but by asking artists, curators and academics to offer propositions and provocations, citing up to three works that illustrate their case.
