The Flaherty Film Seminar, the USC Center for Ethnographic Media Arts (CEMA), USC School of Cinematic Arts, and Los Angeles Filmforum present: The 2025 Los Angeles Flaherty Pod.

Entering its 70th year, the Flaherty Film Seminar is revered as one of the most significant convenings around non-fiction cinema. Each year filmmakers, scholars, students, curators, critics, archivists, and cinephiles gather for an immersive, week-long program of film screenings, in-depth discussions, artist talks, installations, and/or performances around a theme.

6/30: Full Day Seminar:

Sunday, June 30th, Join Flaherty's Los Angeles "Pod" to watch and discuss The Flaherty Seminar's 69th program, programmed by May Adadol Ingawanij & Julian Ross. Three free programs presented in collaboration with Art in the Park and LA's Department of Cultural Affairs, with assistance from LA Microcinema Shadow Kitchen. In keeping with Flaherty's ethos, all films will be a surprise to the viewers. Screenings will be followed by a moderated discussion.

The Oberhausen Seminar 2018

From 3 to 7 May, in conjunction with LUX (London) and the Robert Flaherty Film Seminar (New York), the Oberhausen Film Festival will hold the Oberhausen Seminar for the fifth time during the 64th festival edition.

The Flaherty: Decades in the Cause of Independent Cinema
This is the inspiring story of The Flaherty, one of the oldest continuously running nonprofit media arts institutions in the world, which has shaped the development of independent film, video, and emerging forms in the United States over the past 60 years. Combining the words of legendary independent filmmakers with a detailed history of The Flaherty, Patricia R. Zimmermann and Scott MacDonald showcase its history and legacy, amply demonstrating how the relationships created at the annual Flaherty seminar have been instrumental in transforming American media history.

Fall 2014 Flaherty NYC: Systems and Layers

This series presents films and videos that depict and embody systems of power and ruptures where these systems become visible. The nature of observing and being observed; life within a surveillance state; individual testimony and collective memory; and the role of the artifact as evidence within suppressed histories are ideas and themes that will be explored throughout the six programs.
