Films, Music, Talk with Barbara Hammer

This Sunday, November 19, at 2:30 p.m, Barbara Hammer and Elisa Port, MD, Chief of breast cancer surgery at Mount Sinai, will be in discussion about medical imaging technologies and patient risk after a screen of three short films: Hammer’s Sanctus (1990, 19 mins. 16mm), an Oxford University tutorial taken with x-ray film called The Movement of the Joints by Cineradiography (1945, 15mins. DCP), and The Fall of the House of Usher (1928, 14 mins. 16mm) by Dr. James Sibley Watson, Jr. and Melville Webber.

OFFoff Cinema: Nacht van de Experimentele Film 2017

Every year, Art Cinema OFFoff organises its own Mass where experimental film and music are worshipped. The 'Nacht van de Experimentele Film' 2017 will take place in the Sint-Autbertus church, part of the Monasterium (Monastery) PoortAckere in the Oude Houtlei. B.A.A.D.M. (a music label from Ghent managed by graphic designers Joris Verdoodt and Mathieu Serruys) and film curator Sofie Verdoodt collaborated to put together the programme. Blasphemous iconoclasts and trance filmmakers from the American avant-garde are accompanied by brand new soundtracks by promising talent from the experimental music scene. Séances and installations complement the programme.

Esta sesión es un homenaje al papel de programador y divulgador cinematográfico de Frederick Kiesler, con una colección de películas que Kiesler programó en Europa y Estados Unidos.

En 1975, Lillian Kiesler, viuda de Frederick, encontró en su casa de campo una serie de latas con películas de Viking Eggeling, Hans Richter, Walter Ruttmann y la copia original de Ballet Mécanique, de Fernand Léger y Dudley Murphy. Con la ayuda de Jonas Mekas y del Anthology Film Archives, se pudieron restaurar y volver a proyectar. Esta sesión es un homenaje al papel como programador y divulgador cinematográfico de Frederick Kiesler, con una colección de películas que Kiesler programó en Europa y Estados Unidos. Cierra el pase Witch's cradle, película filmada por Maya Deren en la galería Art of This Century de Peggy Guggenheim, diseñada por Frederick Kiesler.

Avant-garde: Experimental Cinema of the 1920s and 30s
In the latter half of the 20th Century, Raymond Rohauer was one of the nation's foremost proponents of experimental cinema. Programming diverse films at the Coronet Theatre in Los Angeles, and making the films in his personal archive available for commercial distribution, he helped preserve and promote avant-garde cinema.

This two-DVD collection assembles some of the most influential and eclectic short films in the Rohauer Collection, including works by Man Ray, Hans Richter, Marcel Duchamp, Watson & Webber, Fernand Léger, Joris Ivens, Dimitri Kirsanoff, Jean Epstein, and Orson Welles.

Unseen Cinema: Early American Avant-Garde Film 1893-1941 premieres a comprehensive 20-program retrospective of the pre-Maya Deren inspired avant-garde film movement in America. Over 160 films in newly preserved and restored 35mm and 16mm film prints survey the hitherto unknown accomplishments of pioneer filmmakers working in the United States and abroad during the formative period of American film. The series postulates an innovative and often controversial view of experimental cinema as a product of avant-garde artists, of Hollywood directors, and of amateur movie-makers working collectively and as individuals at all levels of film production during the last decade of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.

Avant-Garde 2: Experimental Cinema from 1928-1954
In the latter half of the 20th Century, Raymond Rohauer was one of the nation's foremost proponents of experimental cinema. This two-disc collection continues Kino's tribute to the Rohauer Collection, including the early works of Stan Brakhage and influential films by Willard Maas, Gregory Markopoulos, Marie Menken, Dimitri Kirsanoff, Jean Mitry, Sidney Peterson and others. The pièce de résistance is Jean Isidore Isou's passionate manifesto of film aesthetics Traitéde Bave et D'eternité (Venom and Eternity), which sparked a riot when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 1951. This edition of Venom includes 34 minutes of footage never seen in the United States.
