For many years Mark Street has been making small, observational films of the details and energies of public spaces in urban settings. City blocks, parking spaces and storefronts (and the people who bustle on by them) become abstractions as viewed in reflected rain or through the scratched glass of a bus stop enclosure. These city spaces identify a place but carry the mark of time, and are not divorceable from the moment of their making.
Into The Mothlight, the podcast dedicated to artists’ moving image, experimental film and festivals and installation art, has new episodes out. EP. 33 features an interview with New York filmmaker Mark Street, whilst EP.34 looks at the work of Julia Parks, an artist filmmaker working in rural Scotland. Both artist work with analogue film, often hand-processing super 8mm and 16mm film stock.
Iris Film Collective, in collaboration with Dance Troupe Practice is pleased to present “A Roll For Peter”, the touring program of films made in tribute to the late great filmmaker Peter Hutton.
The films come to Vancouver in serendipitous confluence with two screenings as part of the DIM series at The Pacific Cinematheque of Hutton’s work (the second takes place on April 26).
Hutton, an American artist and educator, developed a unique perspective on both urban and remote landscapes through his images from the early 1970’s until his death in 2016.

Mark Street, Filmmaker coming in from New York, has been making films, videos and installations for 30 years. His work has moved from tactile, abstract explorations of 16mm film to essays on the urban experience to improvised feature length narratives. Street works in the tradition of street photography, recording images almost every day, exploring the tension between improvisation and structure. He has shown at places like the Museum of Modern Art in New York as well as venues such as a former strip club in New Orleans called the Pussycat Cavern.

Light Movement returns to Spektrum this month, and in more ways than one! Colour Spaces presents a collection of films in which colour is a key factor, either in forming the works concept, its formal structure, its depiction of space, or simply an atmosphere. This screening groups together a wide range of works by some incredible filmmakers and artists, all using colour in ways unique to their respective practices.
