    This session, a look at Japanese avant-garde cinema of the seventies and eighties, brings together the work of the leading figures of that movement with that of practically invisible artists. The playful cinema of illusion of these three generations of directors combines the representation of landscape with a minimalist analysis of the cinematographic device.

  • Synch Pulse - No. 13: Analogue Electronic Music

    This Synch Pulse screening will showcase a selection of shorts featuring some of the early experimenters with electronic music. In the first half, pioneering composers in Britain, France, Germany, Holland and the USA, are shown at work in their studios in the 1960s, surrounded by tape recorders and analogue tone generating equipment.

  • Xcèntric: Rameau’s Nephew. A Talking Picture by Michael Snow

    Based on an imaginary philosophical conversation by Diderot, Michael Snow made this treatise on different ways of looking and listening in the cinema, adopting a tone of satire similar to that of the French encyclopaedist. This extensive work comprehensively addresses many of the perceptual problems raised by sound film.

  • Refle-x-périmental #16 : Focus on the Canyon Cinema Co-op

    In 2025, Refle-x-périmental continues to pay tribute to the work of experimental film cooperatives that emerged from the 1960s onwards, embracing independence, rebellion, and the (re)invention of both avant-garde cinema and thought. After celebrating the co-ops founded in New York, Hamburg, and Amsterdam, as well as the 50th anniversary of the Paris Films Coop, the winter season will open with a focus on the West Coast of the United States.
