Welcome to a screening with the Basel-based filmmaker and artist Hannes Schüpbach. Since the 1990’s, Schüpbach has created a dynamic work focusing on the fine-calibrated changes of the gestures, landscapes, bodies and light. In his 16mm films, we often encounter a peculiar movement between spontaneity, intimacy and a progestically fragmented work in which, as he expressed it—the “the surroundings meet the eye” — crystallizes a form that is unmistakable Schüpbachsk.

A selection of films in which the film's skin is lacerated, torn, cut, peeled off, and glued back together to create cinematic works that evoke sensations of memory, resurfacing buried memories. This program offers critical perspectives on images through the materials whose intimacy these films explore.

Real-time cartographic improvisations using projected, manipulated digital maps by Eric Theise, in collaboration with Ed Osborn’s real-time wrangling of live electronics and saturated field recordings. A visual wash of street grids, land masses, water bodies, and curiosities from built and natural environments. Resonant openings and switchbacks. Orphaned labels. Free-floating symbology. At 29 Boulevard Saint-Martin in Paris, a plaque states that "Georges Méliès, creator of the cinematographic spectacle, conjurer, inventor of numerous illusions, was born in this building on 8 December 1861".
