The Filmmakers Cooperative, NYC was created by a division of the New American Cinema Group, (NACG) in 1961, as a result of the collaboration between 22 NYC artists (Jonas Mekas, Shirley Clarke, Ken and Flo Jacobs, Andy Warhol and Jack Smith...). They took up again that tradition of personal films made by artists and created the first distribution cooperative in America because their works were rejected by commercial cinema circuits. They were part of a countercultural movement called Underground or Avant Garde cinema that, with a great social and political conscience, fought against the ethical and aesthetic canons of mass indoctrination established by the Hollywood industry.
