Designed in collaboration with Crater-Lab, this session presents three recent works by members of the collective, and one by Mexican Elena Pardo, one of the artistes participating in SCREEN, the international residency programme of the Spectral project. These four performances with multiple 16mm projectors, slides and other image-making artifacts and handcrafted effects demonstrate the type of work this independent collective produces in our city.

Set up in Barcelona in 2014, Crater-Lab is an independent creation lab, self-managed by artists and filmmakers, which aims to promote the production of artisan cinema on film, and to generate the material bases for creating and experimenting in all its processes (filming, developing, copying, animation, plastic intervention, screening, etc.). Its activities, like the research of its members and residents, are mostly related to expanded and performative cinema practices. This session will include a recent representative sample.

Desterra, Yago Alcover, 2022, 16 mm, 15 min, live sound
This piece looks at the decentralization of the projection apparatus, in which emulsion, film, loop, projection and sound amplification are conceived as an immense diagram of waves and vibrations. It is an invitation to go back to the foundations of screening and the formation of image and sound.

In-Out-Around, Luis Macias, 2024, 16 mm (x3) and 35mm slides, 25 min approx.
In the space between wakefulness and sleep, a disembodied forest emerges from the darkness. This piece is made up of a complex architecture of 16mm projections and slides driven by external loopers, motors and shutters, and a sound composition performed live by Tomás Novoa.

Por dentro somos color, Elena Pardo, Mexico, 2024, 16 mm (x3), 30 min approx., digital sound by Valeria Jonard and Abderrahman Anzaldua
In Santa María Tlahuitoltepec, Oaxaca, the women’s organization Poj Kaa runs a community herbarium. Its walks in search of plants are a way of sharing knowledge among midwives, healers and xëmaapyë. In Teotitlán del Valle, the Ruiz family uses plants and insects to dye the wool with which they weave rugs. This film interweaves the two powers of plants: healing and giving colour.

Morfologías fluctuantes, Barbara Ghidini and Antonio Bértolo, 2024, 16 mm (x4), silent, 25 min approx.
This work is based on footage shot in an old industrial area of Barcelona, and in the Monegros desert with its tozales, strange geological formations. The former collapses, giving way to the latter in an inevitable event. High-contrast black-and-white, negative and positive images form the 21 loops that make up the piece, shown by four projectors.

This activity is a collaboration between Xcèntric, Crater-Lab and Spectral.
