Reel to Reel -to JONAS MEKAS- BY Chihiro ITO

By NO WORLD projec... on Wed, 10/04/2024 - 00:19

Embracing the enduring legacy of Jonas Mekas, a visionary who dedicated his life to democratizing film, media, and art, the Monira Foundation and the Jonas Mekas Studio welcomed Chihiro Ito for a six-month-supported Residency and Fellowship in which he worked to support Sebastian Mekas in enhancing the archives and to create new works inspired by that archive. With unwavering commitment, Ito delves into the studio’s rich repository, collaborating with Sebastian Mekas to preserve archival treasures and craft new artistic marvels for ‘Reel to Reel – Jonas Mekas.’ Each week, he immerses himself in the studio’s treasures, infusing them with new life and meaning.‘

Cinédoc's cineclub: Refle-x-périmental #2 - Traits/Portraits

By Marcos Ortega on Tue, 25/04/2023 - 09:05

The second program of Refle-x-périmental is dedicated to cine-portraits. It proposes an exploration of gestures of cinematographic (self)representation based on multiple intersections of the gaze.

From self-portraits (Snow, Unglee) to family (Schefer, Satake), familiar (Mekas, Baillie), or even domestic (Rey) portraits, along with political portraits (Glowczewska, Schefer), these films question the relationship between the filmmakers and their subjects.

By Marcos Ortega on Mon, 21/11/2022 - 03:42

Coinciding with the turn of the century, Jonas Mekas, already in the twilight of his life, undertook an emotional review of his personal world that Xcèntric now recovers on the occasion of the centenary of his birth. From the audiovisual diary in which all his work is set, in As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty the Lithuanian filmmaker captures 30 years of his life in the form of flashes of existence, moments of the beauty of everyday life.

New York, 1962–1964: Underground and Experimental Cinema

By Marcos Ortega on Fri, 15/07/2022 - 02:52

Film at Lincoln Center announces New York, 1962–1964: Underground and Experimental Cinema spotlighting the rise of the New American Cinema, running from July 29–August 4.

1962 to 1964 was a pivotal moment in the evolution of American arts and culture, especially in New York City. These years, crucial to the development of Pop, Minimalism, and performance, saw the emergence of a new generation of radical artists, as well as venues that gave their iconoclastic work a home and a context. Movies, meanwhile, were undergoing a transformation of their own: the rise of a truly independent cinema, of works unencumbered by the medium’s aesthetic conventions and commercial imperatives.

Friday, July 29, 2022 (All day) to Thursday, August 4, 2022 (All day)
