    In a career spanning five decades, Robert Beavers has distinguished himself as one of the most important American avant-garde filmmakers. From My Hand Outstretched to the Winged Distance and Sightless Measure, his cycle of 18 films made across Europe since 1967, to Pitcher of Colored Light (2007) and The Suppliant (2010), intimate portraits shot in the U.S., Beavers has produced a deeply original film language framed by his use of colored filters and mattes.

Portraits of people I have spent time with,places, seasons of the year, weather (storms, snow, blizzards etc...)many of my film-maker friends- streets and parks of New-York- brief escape in nature, out of town- nothing spectacular, unimportant celebrations of life that has gone, by now, and remains only as a record in these personal, brief sketches."   • Landscapes of Resistance, Time and Ecology

    MARETIOPA & HICCUP present the film program Landscapes of Resistance, Time and Ecology, focusing on phenomenon occurring through changes of perspective and animated camera movements as a way to redefine a place and its geography. The method is a frame-by-frame-camera 'animation' where the films works with displacements of time, space and focal points, sometimes with many disparate motifs, or the same places filmed during different times of a day in order to visualize weather and light changes, addressing a political/ecological environment to agenda. The result is an interaction between the predictable mechanistic nature of technology and the unpredictable qualities of the natural world.

    For the second installment of Eye on a Director, MAD highlights the collection of the legendary film distributor and archive Canyon Cinema. In the late 1950s, Canyon Cinema brought together independent film artists whose work reflected a remarkable diversity in style and content. Variously called avant-garde, underground and experimental, these artists shared a vision of filmmaking as a form of personal expression, free from the demands and constraints of commercial conventions.

    A rare behind-the-scenes view of the exploding New York “underground” in the late sixities, a turbulent time and place that was to change American culture forever. A German TV crew, led by journalist Gideon Bachmann, explores the epicenter of the sixties revolution in art, music, poetry and film and interviews the main players in the “New American Cinema,” that was born on the streets of New York.
